Traditional operating systems should be paying close attention right now. The ground is shifting underneath them in a way that has nothing to do with better icons or smoother animations.

The political momentum is backing this up in a serious way. France has ordered its ministries to begin planning a full exit from Windows in favor of Linux, framing US tech dependence as a strategic risk.

Germany's Schleswig-Holstein has already migrated over 30,000 government workers, and Denmark's Ministry of Digital Affairs committed to a full transition to Linux by autumn 2025. There is now a formal proposal called EU OS, a community-led initiative to create a standardized Linux desktop built specifically for European public sector organizations.

None of that is hobbyist enthusiasm. That is procurement policy, and procurement policy moves slowly right up until it moves all at once.

Thin Beats Layered

At the same time, Linux's biggest strengths become more valuable, not less. Thin, flexible, efficient architecture with less overhead and fewer abstractions means a more direct relationship between the user, the system, and the work.

When an AI agent is operating on your behalf, you want that layer to be clean. You want speed, and Linux is built for speed.

The OS that was always powerful but never approachable is about to become both. That is a problem Microsoft and Apple have not had to solve before.
