Will automated AI web design replace web designers? Probably, one day. That is an honest answer rather than a defensive one, and Web Experts has no interest in pretending the tools are worse than they are.

The more useful question is what gets replaced first. Good designers bring more to the table than one page websites and poorly designed sites woefully lacking in SEO. The stuff at the bottom of the market is always the first to go, and it was never the work that mattered.

We Have Heard This Before

This argument is not new to anyone who has been building since 1999. The first round came when custom web design was going to be replaced by templates, and the templates did take a slice of the market, but they did not take the clients who needed something built for how their business actually works.

The second round came when outsourcing agencies called our offices around the clock, wanting us to hand off our design work and white label it. White labeling really meant lying to our customers about who did the work, and that was a line Web Experts was not going to cross. The pitch changes every few years, but the underlying promise is always the same: someone else, or something else, can do this cheaper if you stop caring how it gets done.

When Everything Sounds The Same

AI blog writing is all the rage right now, and every post sounds exactly the same. The cadence is identical, the transitions are identical, and the conclusions arrive precisely when you expect them to arrive.

It has gotten to the point where we crave the imperfections of a crooked picture or a misspelled word. That craving is a signal worth paying attention to, because it says something about what readers are actually responding to when they decide whether to trust a company. Sameness is not neutral, it is a cost.

Taste Cannot Be Automated

Taste and nuance cannot be automated. A designer decides what to leave out, which is a judgment call that depends on knowing the client, the audience, and the thing being sold. A generated layout has no opinion about any of that, it just fills the space it was given.

Web Experts uses AI every day and it is genuinely useful. AI in the right hands can do great things, and we would rather work with it than argue about it.

The Problems Users Never See

The flip side is that AI used recklessly causes problems users never even see. Those are the worst kind, because nobody files a complaint about a site that quietly fails to rank, or a structure that quietly makes everything harder to fix six months later.

We wrote about two recent incidents in an article called The Brickwork You Only See at a Red Light. The title is the point: some of this work is only visible when you happen to stop and look, and most people never stop.
